Season DETAIL - 2011-2012

wednesday are promoted to the championship (tier 2)

The so called "mind the gap season".  Sheffield United were 8 points ahead of Wednesday at one point and looked firm favourites to secure automatic promotion.  However Wednesday went on an unbeaten run of 14 matches to the end of the season, sparked by a 1-0 victory over United in February.  Wednesday won 11 and drew 3 of the matches to clinch 2nd place in the league, 3 points clear of United who finished the season in 3rd position.  United eventually lost to Huddersfield on penalties in the play-off final.
