Black Players

The definition of a black player is a difficult one.  Even Wikipedia is divided on what a black person is, stating:  Black is a racialized classification of people, usually a political and skin color-based category for specific populations with a mid to dark brown complexion.  Not all people considered "black" have dark skin; in certain countries, often in socially based systems of racial classification in the Western world, the term "black" is used to describe persons who are perceived as dark-skinned compared to other populations.

The following players are my interpretation of the black players, who have played for Sheffield Wednesday.  There are a number of players who I'm not sure if they should be included or not, but this list features typically Afro-Caribbean players with a couple of Afro-Surinamese players.  Players from South America or as in the case of Massimo Luongo, Australasia have been excluded.  If anyone has feelings on who should or should not be included in this list, please contact me.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BLACK FOOTBALLERS AND MANAGERS

Arthur Wharton (right) is generally recognised as the first black player in English football.  Wharton was born in what is now Accra in Ghana.  His father, Henry Warton was Grenadian who had a Scottish father and black mother and his mother was Ghanaian.  He moved to England around 1882 and soon started playing football.  He played in goal as an amateur but turned professional with Rotherham Town in 1889.  He played in the 2nd Division with them in 1893 before moving to Sheffield United, where he became the first black player to play in the 1st Division.

Viv Anderson (who later played for Sheffield Wednesday), was the first black played to play for England in 1978 while he was with Nottingham Forest.  The first black player to play for Sheffield Wednesday was Tony Cunningham, a Jamaican-born player who made his Wednesday debut in November 1983.

The first black manager in English football was Tony Collins (left) who was appointed Rochadale's manager in 1961.  Collins was born in Kensington in 1926 with a white mother and black father.  It's not widely known, but on being released from the army in 1947, he was recommended to Eric Taylor who was Wednesday's manager at the time.  After a trial he was signed as a professional by Wednesday, though he never played in a first-team match for the club.

Wednesday's first black manager is generally considered to be Darren Moore, although a case could be made for Jos Luhukay, but he is not of Afro-Caribbean descent.  Moore was born in Birmingham of Jamaican descent.  He was appointed Wednesday manager in March 2021.
