This match between The Wednesday & Aston Villa is notable for having been abandoned after 79.5 minutes due to bad light, with Wednesday winning 3-1 at the time. The referee Mr Scragg misses his train and the match starts seven minutes late with a local offical acting as referee. After a further delay at half-time Mr Scragg takes the whistle for the second half only to abandon the match 34.5 minutes in. Aston Villa naturally want the entire match replayed but the Football League's management committee did not deem it necessary and the remaining 10.5 minutes were subsequently played on the 13th March 1999. Wednesday scored another goal to run out 4-1 winners and in all 29 players took part in this remarkable fixture! Wednesday players who played in both parts of the match were credited with one appearance, and Wednesday players who only played in one part of the game were also credited with one appearance, so in all 16 Wednesday players were credited with an appearance in the match!

The match is also notable as a ballot was held to enable supporters to indicate where they would like Wednesday's new ground to be with the lease on Olive Grove running out. Apparently some 4,767 supporters favoured Carbrook, with 4,115 preferring Owlerton.
